Overview

2-octyl cyanoacrylate is a long-chain cyanoacrylate ester used primarily as a topical tissue adhesive for the closure of surgical incisions and traumatic lacerations. Developed by Ethicon (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) and marketed under the brand name Dermabond, it polymerizes in an exothermic reaction when exposed to moisture, creating a flexible, waterproof bridge that holds wound edges in apposition while providing a microbial barrier. Beyond surface wound care, it is utilized in interventional radiology and gastroenterology as a liquid embolic agent. In procedures such as percutaneous transhepatic variceal embolization (PTVE), it is injected into variceal veins where it rapidly solidifies upon contact with blood, inducing thrombosis and effectively managing gastroesophageal variceal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis.
