The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is a monovalent vaccine developed specifically to combat the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. It was produced in both inactivated (killed virus) and live attenuated (weakened virus) forms by various pharmaceutical manufacturers. The vaccine contains antigens derived from the A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09 strain, typically standardized to 15 μg of hemagglutinin per dose for inactivated versions. Its primary mechanism of action involves inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin protein, which prevents the virus from attaching to and infecting host cells. Some formulations utilized adjuvants like MF59 to enhance the immune response, while others were non-adjuvanted. It was administered via intramuscular injection or intranasal spray depending on the formulation.
