The 2010-11 trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) is a seasonal vaccine designed to protect against three strains of the influenza virus: two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B strain. For the 2010-2011 Northern Hemisphere season, the WHO-recommended formulation included antigens from A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like, A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like, and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like (Victoria lineage) viruses. This specific formulation was notable for being the first seasonal vaccine to incorporate the 2009 H1N1 pandemic strain as the standard seasonal H1N1 component. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein, which prevents the virus from attaching to and entering host cells. It is typically administered via intramuscular injection and is produced by multiple global manufacturers following annual WHO strain recommendations.
