The 2016-2017 influenza vaccine is a quadrivalent, inactivated seasonal vaccine designed to protect against four different strains of the influenza virus: two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). For the 2016-2017 Northern Hemisphere season, the vaccine was formulated to include antigens from A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like, A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like, B/Brisbane/60/2008-like, and B/Phuket/3073/2013-like viruses. This specific vaccine was the subject of a clinical study at Emory University (NCT02915471) aimed at evaluating the immunologic response in individuals with varying histories of annual vaccination. Administered via intramuscular injection, the vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein, which is essential for viral entry into host cells. By targeting multiple strains, the quadrivalent formulation provides broader protection compared to trivalent vaccines, particularly against the co-circulation of both influenza B lineages.
