A 2019-nCoV inactivated vaccine is a type of immunization against COVID-19 that utilizes a chemically killed version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The production process typically involves propagating the virus in Vero cell cultures, followed by inactivation using agents such as beta-propiolactone. Because the virus is inactivated, it cannot replicate or cause disease but retains the structural integrity of its proteins (including the spike, envelope, and nucleocapsid proteins) to trigger an immune response. These vaccines are often formulated with adjuvants like aluminum hydroxide to enhance immunogenicity. Major examples include Sinovac's CoronaVac and Sinopharm's BBIBP-CorV, which have been widely authorized for emergency use and approved globally to prevent severe disease and hospitalization caused by SARS-CoV-2.
