Drug intelligence / Profile preview
20% autologous serum in balanced salt solution is a blood-derived ophthalmic treatment prepared from a patient's own peripheral blood. The process involves collecting blood, allowing it to clot, and centrifuging it to extract the serum, which is then diluted to a 20% concentration using a balanced salt solution (BSS). This formulation is rich in essential biochemical components that mimic natural tears, including growth factors (such as EGF, TGF-beta, and PDGF), vitamins (Vitamin A), and cell adhesion proteins (fibronectin and albumin). These components work synergistically to promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. It is primarily used for the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects (PED) that are refractory to conventional therapies. This specific preparation was studied by the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in clinical trials comparing its efficacy to amniotic membrane transplantation.
