23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine

The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is a sterile solution containing purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 different serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is designed to induce immunity against these serotypes by stimulating the production of antibodies that target the bacterial capsule, thereby preventing invasive diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis. Unlike conjugate vaccines, PPSV23 does not contain a protein carrier and primarily induces a T-cell independent immune response. The primary indication for PPSV23 is the prevention of pneumococcal disease in adults aged 50 years or older and in children and adults at increased risk due to certain medical conditions or immunocompromising states[2][3][7]. It can be administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously[1][6].
