Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) developed by China National Biotec Group (CNBG), a subsidiary of Sinopharm, is a biologic indicated for the prevention of pneumococcal infections. It contains purified capsular polysaccharide antigens from 23 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19A, 19F, 20, 22F, 23F, and 33F). The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce serotype-specific antibodies, providing active immunization against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumonia. It is typically administered as a single 0.5 mL intramuscular injection and is indicated for adults and children aged 2 years and older. Clinical development has included Phase 4 trials (such as NCT04700618) to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of revaccination in elderly populations.
