23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention)

The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (23vPPV) is an inactivated vaccine composed of purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 different serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is designed to provide active immunization against invasive pneumococcal diseases, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, in adults and children aged two years and older. The vaccine works by stimulating the production of type-specific antibodies that enhance the opsonization and phagocytosis of the bacteria. In China, this vaccine has been available since 2006. The Jiangsu Province Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been involved in Phase 4 clinical trials to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine, particularly when co-administered with other vaccines such as the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) in healthy children and older adults.
