The 24-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is a multivalent vaccine candidate designed to provide broad protection against invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and pneumonia caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It incorporates capsular polysaccharides from 24 distinct serotypes, each covalently linked to a carrier protein (such as CRM197) to induce a T-cell dependent immune response. This mechanism is particularly effective in infants and the elderly, providing longer-lasting immunity and better immunological memory than unconjugated polysaccharide vaccines. By targeting 24 serotypes, these candidates aim to expand coverage beyond existing vaccines like PCV13, PCV15, and PCV20, addressing additional serotypes responsible for significant disease burden. Several companies are developing versions of this vaccine, including Vaxcyte (using site-specific conjugation technology), Sinovac, and Fosun Adgenvax.
