Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 24-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV24) is a multivalent biologic developed by Shandong Kunli Biopharmaceutical for the prevention of pneumococcal diseases, including pneumonia and invasive infections caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. This vaccine is designed to provide broader protection than earlier generation vaccines (such as PCV13 or PCV15) by targeting 24 distinct serotypes of the bacterium. The mechanism involves conjugating capsular polysaccharides from these serotypes to a carrier protein, which enhances the immune response by recruiting T-cell help, thereby inducing long-term immunological memory. This approach is particularly effective in vulnerable populations such as infants and the elderly. The vaccine is currently in Phase 1/2 clinical development in China.
