25-deacetyl-rifabutin

**25-deacetyl-rifabutin** is the major active metabolite of rifabutin, produced by hepatic metabolism. Like its parent molecule, it is an **antibiotic** of the rifamycin class, with activity against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and related species. Its antimicrobial effect is due to inhibition of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in susceptible bacteria, resulting in suppression of RNA synthesis and cell death.
