Overview

**25-deacetyl-rifabutin** is the major active metabolite of rifabutin, produced by hepatic metabolism. Like its parent molecule, it is an **antibiotic** of the rifamycin class, with activity against *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* and related species. Its antimicrobial effect is due to inhibition of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in susceptible bacteria, resulting in suppression of RNA synthesis and cell death. Studies indicate the metabolite retains significant antimicrobial activity, showing additive effects when present with the parent drug, and contributing to the overall bactericidal action of rifabutin regimens[3][5].
