25CN-NBOH (N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-cyanophenylethylamine) is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the phenethylamine class of hallucinogens. It was first described in 2014 at the University of Copenhagen as a highly selective and potent agonist for the serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A (5-HT2A). The compound exhibits strong selectivity for the 5-HT2A receptor over related subtypes such as 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C, with minimal off-target activity at other receptors or transporters. In preclinical studies, it has been used to probe serotonergic signaling and psychedelic effects in animal models due to its robust brain penetration and rapid onset after administration. Its primary mechanism is activation of central nervous system serotonin receptors implicated in perception, cognition, and mood[1][3][4][7].
