2F5 is a fully human monoclonal antibody developed by Polymun Scientific Immunbiologische Forschung that targets the membrane-proximal external region (MPER) of the HIV-1 gp41 envelope glycoprotein. As a broadly neutralizing antibody (bNAb), it binds to a highly conserved epitope to inhibit the fusion of the viral and host cell membranes, thereby preventing HIV-1 entry. It has been investigated both as a topical microbicide gel for the prevention of HIV transmission and via systemic routes in combination with other antibodies (such as 2G12 and 4E10) for HIV/AIDS therapy and prevention. The antibody is well-characterized in scientific literature as one of the rare antibodies capable of neutralizing a broad range of HIV-1 strains.
