Drug intelligence / Profile preview
2% hydroxymethyl cellulose gel is a pharmacologically inert, viscoelastic polymer formulation used as a placebo control in clinical research. In the context of a Phase 2 randomized controlled trial sponsored by Fayoum University, this gel was applied locally to the extraction sockets of patients following the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. The study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of a 1% metformin gel in promoting bone healing and increasing bone density, using the hydroxymethyl cellulose gel as a neutral comparator. Hydroxymethyl cellulose is a semi-synthetic derivative of cellulose commonly utilized in pharmaceutical and dental applications as a thickening agent, stabilizer, or vehicle due to its biocompatibility and lack of inherent therapeutic activity in bone regeneration.
