Overview

3,5-diiodothyronine is a naturally occurring thyroid hormone and a metabolite of triiodothyronine (T3). It acts as an active thyroid hormone analog and is found in small amounts in the human body. Research indicates that it can increase resting metabolic rate and oxygen consumption by directly stimulating mitochondrial activity. In animal studies (notably rats), administration of 3,5-diiodothyronine has been shown to reduce body mass gain and fat storage while increasing energy expenditure. Mechanistically, it acts as an alternative ligand for the thyroid hormone receptor beta and stimulates hepatic lipid catabolism through mechanisms distinct from T3. It also suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis by reducing serum levels of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3). While some research suggests potential applications for obesity or hyperlipidemia due to its metabolic effects, there is no robust clinical evidence supporting its use in humans for these indications[1][4][5][8].
