Overview

**3,7-Dimethyl-1-propargylxanthine (DMPX)** is a synthetic xanthine derivative and a structural analog of caffeine. It is a potent, selective antagonist of adenosine A2 receptors, exhibiting much higher potency than caffeine in experimental models for blocking both peripheral and central effects of adenosine receptor agonists. DMPX shows approximately 28-fold and 15-fold higher potency than caffeine for antagonizing peripheral and central adenosine A2 responses, respectively. Its selectivity for A2 over A1 adenosine receptors makes it useful for research on adenosine receptor subtypes and their physiological functions. DMPX is primarily a research compound and is not approved or marketed as a pharmaceutical drug[1][3][4][6][7].
