Overview

JZP-4, also known by its chemical name 3-(2,3,5-trichloro-phenyl)-pyrazine-2,6-diamine, is a novel chemical entity developed by Jazz Pharmaceuticals. It functions as a potent calcium and sodium channel blocker, exhibiting use-dependent and voltage-dependent inhibition. Preclinical studies indicated that JZP-4 had greater potency and efficacy compared to lamotrigine in animal models for refractory epilepsy, antimania, and antidepressant activities. It was being evaluated in clinical trials as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer, with initial proof-of-concept studies demonstrating activity in epilepsy models. Development for epilepsy and bipolar disorder progressed to Phase II before being delayed for formulation work, and there are no subsequent updates on its continued development.
