Overview

3-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA) is a pentacyclic triterpene small molecule derived from the resin of *Boswellia serrata* (Indian frankincense). It acts as a selective, non-competitive inhibitor of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) enzyme, which is responsible for the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes. Developed primarily by Sultan Qaboos University, AKBA is being investigated for the treatment of nephrolithiasis (renal stones), where it is formulated as 'Luban' capsules. Beyond its anti-inflammatory and litholytic potential, AKBA has shown preclinical activity in various cancers and renoprotective effects via the Klotho/TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway.
