Overview

3-grass pollen extract is a sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) used for treating grass pollen-induced allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, with or without mild asthma. The specific formulation mentioned in clinical studies contains standardized extracts from three grass pollens: Dactylis glomerata (Orchard grass), Lolium perenne (Perennial ryegrass), and Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass). Administered as sublingual drops, the treatment aims to desensitize the immune system to these common allergens. This immunomodulatory process is thought to work by shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic reaction to a more tolerant Th1/Treg-mediated response. This is evidenced by an increase in allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies, which act as "blocking antibodies," leading to a reduction in allergy symptoms upon natural exposure to grass pollen. The product is developed and manufactured by Stallergenes Greer under the brand name Staloral.
