Overview

3-hydroxyanthranilic acid is a small molecule that is an intermediate in the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism. It occurs naturally in all living species, including humans, where it participates in enzymatic reactions and can be found in various tissues and biological fluids such as urine and blood[1][2][6]. It has antioxidant properties but also exhibits prooxidant activity under certain conditions, contributing to oxidative stress. Mechanistically, it acts as a free radical scavenger but may also induce the formation of reactive oxygen species. It is not approved for pharmaceutical use and is primarily used experimentally or as a research chemical[1][6]. There are no known brand names or marketed formulations.
