Overview

**3-Indolebutyric Acid (IBA)** is a synthetic plant hormone in the auxin family, widely used to stimulate root formation in plant cuttings and as an ingredient in commercial horticultural rooting products. It is structurally similar to the naturally occurring plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). IBA acts by promoting cell elongation and division, thereby enhancing root initiation and development. While originally considered strictly synthetic, it has been found naturally occurring in some plants such as maize and willow species. In humans, it is detected as a tryptophan-related metabolite but does not have pharmaceutical use or approval for therapeutic indications[2][5][6][8].
