Overview

3-Methylmethcathinone (3-MMC), also known as metaphedrone, is a synthetic cathinone and a structural isomer of the recreational drug mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone). It acts as a potent monoamine transporter inhibitor, specifically targeting the norepinephrine transporter (NET), dopamine transporter (DAT), and serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby increasing the synaptic concentrations of these neurotransmitters. While primarily used recreationally as a psychostimulant, it has been the subject of clinical research by Universiteit Maastricht to characterize its safety profile, vital sign effects, and pharmacokinetics in humans. In a first-in-human study, oral doses up to 100 mg were found to be generally well-tolerated in healthy volunteers, though they produced dose-dependent increases in heart rate and blood pressure.
