Overview

CKBA (3-O-cyclohexanecarbonyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) is an investigational topical small molecule drug candidate derived by chemical modification of acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA), a natural anti-inflammatory compound found in frankincense. It functions as a potent inhibitor of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), which in turn suppresses the differentiation of Th17 cells, a key driver of inflammatory skin conditions. Developed primarily by Hangzhou Third People's Hospital, CKBA is being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials for the treatment of non-segmental vitiligo and has also been studied for mild-to-moderate plaque psoriasis. Preclinical data indicate that the compound has low systemic bioavailability and a favorable safety profile, with no significant skin irritation or sensitization observed in animal models.
