Overview

3-O-Methyl-d-glucose is a non-metabolizable glucose analogue, a D-aldohexose derived from D-glucose with a methyl group substitution at position 3. It is not phosphorylated by hexokinase and is primarily utilized as a research tool and marker to assess glucose transport in various cells and organ systems, including studies on blood-brain barrier transport and hexose distribution in the brain. It has also been investigated for its role in diabetes research, particularly in understanding glucose metabolism and insulin response, and has shown an ability to inhibit glucose-induced insulin release. It is not a naturally occurring metabolite.
