Drug intelligence / Profile preview
30% metformin gel is a topical formulation of the biguanide metformin being investigated for the treatment of melasma. While metformin is primarily known as an oral antihyperglycemic agent for type 2 diabetes, its topical application targets hyperpigmentation through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). This activation leads to the downregulation of melanogenesis-related genes and enzymes, such as tyrosinase and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF), effectively reducing melanin synthesis. The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre is evaluating this 30% concentration in clinical trials to compare its efficacy and safety against the gold-standard triple combination cream containing hydroquinone, tretinoin, and fluocinolone acetonide.
