Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Diclofenac-Pharmos-osteoarthritis (knee) is a topical 3% diclofenac nano-emulsion cream developed by Pharmos Corporation for the treatment of osteoarthritis pain in the knee. The formulation utilizes Pharmos' proprietary NanoEmulsion technology, which consists of a solvent-free topical vehicle based on drug entrapment in stable, submicron particles (100-200 nm) of oil-in-water emulsions. This delivery system is designed to provide targeted delivery of the lipophilic drug to muscle and joints while reducing systemic exposure compared to oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The active ingredient, diclofenac, works as an enzyme inhibitor, specifically targeting cyclooxygenase enzymes to provide analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Pharmos completed a Phase 2, multi-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the safety and analgesic efficacy of the cream applied three times daily for 28 days in subjects with knee osteoarthritis in 2011.
