Drug intelligence / Profile preview
3% sodium chloride + sodium bicarbonate solution is a hypertonic saline formulation being investigated for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis, particularly in pediatric populations. Developed under the leadership of Stefania La Grutta, MD, as part of the RinASol clinical trial program, the solution is administered via nebulization. Its primary mechanism of action is osmotic; the high salt concentration draws water out of the swollen nasal mucosa, thereby reducing edema and congestion. The addition of sodium bicarbonate serves to buffer the solution and act as a mucolytic, thinning nasal secretions to enhance mucociliary clearance and the removal of inflammatory triggers. This approach aims to provide a steroid-free alternative or adjunct for managing nasal inflammation and symptoms in children.
