Overview

4-dimethylaminophenol (DMAP) is a small molecule aromatic compound containing both phenolic and amine functional groups. It is primarily used as an emergency antidote for acute cyanide poisoning and has also shown effectiveness in treating hydrogen sulfide toxicity. The mechanism of action involves the induction of methemoglobinemia; DMAP oxidizes hemoglobin to methemoglobin which binds cyanide ions and reduces their toxicity. This treatment is suitable only as an initial emergency intervention and must be followed by definitive therapy with agents such as sodium thiosulfate or cobalamin. Intravenous administration is preferred due to the risk of muscular necrosis with intramuscular injection[1][2][4].
