The compound is thought to act as an anti-inflammatory agent, specifically targeting the pathways involved in skin redness. In 2007, the FDA classified the products as unapproved new drugs due to therapeutic claims, leading to their removal from the market and subsequent reformulation as cosmetic skincare products like Redness Relief CalmPlex.
