4‑Phenylbutylamine is a small molecule organic compound with the formula C₁₀H₁₅N, characterized by a phenyl group attached to a four-carbon butan‑1‑amine chain. It is primarily used in research and chemical synthesis, notably as an intermediate for producing aralkylamines and as a precursor in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory derivatives. Pharmacologically, it acts as a competitive inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme responsible for degrading neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. By inhibiting MAO-A, it increases levels of these monoamines in biological systems[5][6][10]. The compound has also been studied for its ability to induce apoptosis in certain cell lines and serves as a substrate for semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO), implicating roles in neurochemistry and metabolic research[5][6]. It is not approved for clinical use or marketed under any brand name.
