Overview

4-Phospho-D-erythronohydroxamic acid is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the class of monosaccharide phosphates. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme 3,4-dihydroxy-2-butanone 4-phosphate synthase (DHBPS), which is involved in the riboflavin biosynthesis pathway in bacteria. This pathway is essential for many pathogens but absent in humans; thus DHBPS and its inhibitors are considered potential antibacterial drug targets. The compound has also been studied as an inhibitor of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), particularly in Trypanosoma brucei[1][4][5]. Its mechanism involves binding to DHBPS and preventing formation of a key catalytic intermediate required for enzyme activity[5]. The compound is experimental and not approved for clinical use.
