Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**5β-scymnol** is a synthetic steroid derivative and INCI-listed skin conditioning ingredient derived from shark tissue. It acts as a **potent hydroxyl radical scavenger** and is employed for the treatment of skin blemishes such as blocked pores and acne. It has also demonstrated **antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects**, notably mitigating paracetamol-induced oxidative liver damage in animal models by virtue of its unique tri-hydroxyl-substituted aliphatic side chain. In vitro, it also acts as a metal ion chelator and decreases UVB-induced inflammation (e.g., TNF-α release) in normal melanocytes, suggesting roles in anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and skin conditioning applications[1][3][5][7].
