Overview

5,10,15,20-tetrakis(carboxyphenyl)porphine (TCPP) is a synthetic meso-substituted porphyrin compound primarily utilized as a research reagent and photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It is characterized by its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen, upon activation by specific wavelengths of light, leading to localized oxidative damage and cell death. Research has particularly focused on its efficacy against *Leishmania* parasites, where its metalloporphyrin derivatives, such as the Zinc(II) complex, have demonstrated significant antiparasitic activity. Additionally, the Manganese(III) derivative of TCPP functions as a cell-permeable superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic and peroxynitrite scavenger, offering potential antioxidant and cytoprotective applications. While widely used in chemical and biological research, TCPP is not currently developed as a branded pharmaceutical product by a specific commercial entity.
