Overview

**5-amino-1-methylquinolinium (commonly abbreviated as 5-amino-1MQ or 5-AMQ) is a small molecule inhibitor of the enzyme nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). NNMT is involved in cellular metabolism and energy homeostasis and is highly active in adipose tissue. Overexpression of NNMT has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. By selectively inhibiting NNMT, 5-amino-1MQ reduces fat storage in adipocytes, enhances energy expenditure by increasing NAD+ levels, and improves glucose clearance from the blood. Preclinical studies have shown that it can reduce body weight and adiposity in diet-induced obese mice without significant adverse effects. It has also demonstrated potential efficacy against cancer cell growth in animal models. As of now, there are no documented side effects except for possible sleep disturbances reported anecdotally; however, it has not yet entered clinical trials or received regulatory approval for human use[2][3][4][6][7].**
