Overview

A combination therapy consisting of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) and carmustine. 5-ALA is a porphyrin precursor that leads to selective accumulation of fluorescent compounds in tumor tissue, enabling better visualization during surgery. Carmustine is an alkylating agent that causes cross-links in DNA and RNA, inhibiting cellular processes and leading to cell death. This combination is primarily investigated for the treatment of glioblastoma, with 5-ALA used for fluorescence-guided resection and carmustine wafers implanted during surgery for local chemotherapy delivery.
