Overview

A dual-labeling technique combining two fluorophores used primarily in neurosurgery for tumor visualization. 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is metabolized within tumor cells to protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), which fluoresces red under blue light (400nm), while sodium fluorescein extravasates in areas of blood-brain barrier disruption, emitting yellow-green fluorescence under 560nm light. This combination provides complementary information on tumor cells and blood-brain barrier integrity, allowing better discrimination between necrosis, proliferating tumor, infiltrating tumor, and peritumoral edema during surgical procedures.
