Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of 5-aminosalicylic acid (also known as mesalazine or mesalamine), an anti-inflammatory small molecule drug commonly used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are multipotent stromal cells with regenerative, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties. The rationale for combining these agents is to leverage the direct anti-inflammatory effects of 5-aminosalicylic acid with the tissue-regenerative and immunosuppressive actions of MSCs. MSCs can home to sites of tissue injury or inflammation, secrete bioactive factors that modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair, inhibit apoptosis and fibrosis, and support angiogenesis. This combination may be investigated for synergistic effects in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or other autoimmune/inflammatory disorders[1][4][5].
