This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of three cytotoxic agents: - **5-fluorouracil (5-FU):** An antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis and repair. - **Epirubicin:** An anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to DNA strand breaks and apoptosis. - **Ifosfamide:** An alkylating agent of the oxazaphosphorine group that crosslinks DNA strands, preventing cell division. This combination has been studied for the treatment of advanced or metastatic breast cancer[1] and soft tissue sarcomas[2]. The rationale for combining these agents is their complementary mechanisms of action against rapidly dividing tumor cells. Clinical studies have shown efficacy in inducing tumor responses in these cancers, though with notable hematological toxicity.
