5-fluorouracil effervescent powder

A novel topical formulation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) developed by Al-Azhar University for the treatment of localized stable vitiligo. This formulation utilizes effervescent technology, where gas bubbles (CO2) are generated upon hydration through a reaction between alkali salts and organic acids (such as citric or tartaric acid), enhancing the dissolution and potentially the skin penetration of the drug. While 5-FU is a well-known antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase to prevent DNA synthesis, its use in vitiligo leverages its side effect of hyperpigmentation, which is believed to result from the direct stimulation of melanocytes and an increase in melanosomes within keratinocytes.
