Overview

This is a combination of three compounds—5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), carbidopa, and tyrosine—used as a dietary supplement or investigational therapy. - **5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)** is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor in the biosynthesis of serotonin. It increases central nervous system serotonin levels by serving as a direct precursor to serotonin synthesis[2][3]. - **Carbidopa** is an aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents peripheral conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin, thereby increasing its availability for transport into the brain and reducing peripheral side effects such as nausea[1][3][6]. - **Tyrosine** is an amino acid precursor for catecholamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine) and may support dopamine synthesis in the brain[1][7]. The combination has been studied primarily for neuropsychiatric conditions such as severe dementia due to Alzheimer's disease or multi-infarct dementia, with mixed results; some patients showed improvement while others did not[1][7]. It has also been explored in other contexts including anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, heroin withdrawal symptoms (in combination with other nutrients), but evidence remains limited or inconclusive[6][8].
