Overview

5-Iodobenzovesamicol (IBVM) is a radiolabeled cholinergic neuron marker used primarily in research and clinical imaging. It acts as a high-affinity ligand for the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT), allowing visualization of cholinergic nerve terminals in the brain using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography (PET). Radiolabeled forms such as [^123I]IBVM and [^125I]IBVM are utilized for animal studies and human brain imaging to assess cholinergic function, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease. The compound is highly specific for VAChT and does not significantly bind to other neurotransmitter systems. Its mechanism enables non-invasive mapping of cholinergic deficits associated with cognitive disorders[1][3].
