Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 5-MeO-DMT prodrug is a preclinical-stage, orally active small molecule prodrug being developed by Terran Biosciences for the treatment of neuropsychiatric and psychiatric indications. The active ingredient is 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT), a potent psychedelic that acts primarily as an agonist at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor. Standard 5-MeO-DMT undergoes extensive first-pass hepatic metabolism, rendering it orally inactive. Terran's proprietary prodrug formulation is designed to bypass this metabolic breakdown, enabling oral bioavailability and delivering 5-MeO-DMT-like psychedelic activity via a single oral dose without requiring co-administration of a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Terran intends to pursue the FDA's 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway for this product.
