5-methoxy-2-aminoindane

5-methoxy-2-aminoindane (MEAI) is a synthetic psychoactive compound belonging to the aminoindane class. It acts as a modestly selective serotonin releasing agent (SSRA), with approximately six-fold selectivity for serotonin over norepinephrine and about twenty-fold over dopamine. MEAI also exhibits moderate affinity for the \u03b1\u2082-adrenergic receptor. Its pharmacological profile suggests entactogenic and sympathomimetic effects similar to MDMA but with potentially lower misuse liability. The compound has been investigated for its potential in reducing alcohol consumption and binge drinking behavior due to its reported ability to induce mild euphoria and an alcohol-like "tipsy" experience while decreasing the desire for further alcohol intake.
