Overview

5-N-Allyl-arginine is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid arginine in which an allyl group is attached to the nitrogen at position 5. It acts as a competitive and reversible inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), also known as nitric oxide synthase 1. By inhibiting nNOS activity, it reduces the production of nitric oxide from L‑arginine in neuronal tissues. This compound has been used experimentally to study the role of nNOS in various physiological and pathological processes but is not approved for clinical use[2][5][7].
