Drug intelligence / Profile preview
5% dextrose water (D5W) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution used for fluid replenishment and as a source of calories. In the specific context of the Phase III randomized clinical trial 'Study of Thyroid Hormones in Prematures' (also known as the THOP trial) conducted by New York Medical College, D5W serves as the inactive placebo control. The trial investigates whether continuous infusion of thyroid hormones (levothyroxine T4) combined with oral potassium iodide can reduce neurodevelopmental impairments, such as cerebral palsy or cognitive deficits, in extremely low gestational age neonates (ELGANs) who suffer from transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity. D5W is administered as a continuous intravenous infusion to the control group at a volume matching the active treatment arm to maintain the study's double-blind design.
