Overview

6-bromotryptophan (6-BT) is a novel, microbiome-derived endogenous plasma metabolite produced through the bacterial metabolism of dietary tryptophan. It has emerged as a therapeutic candidate due to its potent anti-inflammatory and insulin-secretagogue properties. Clinical research indicates that 6-BT is associated with the preservation of pancreatic beta-cell function and a reduction in circulating T-cell counts, particularly in the context of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Beyond diabetes, lower circulating levels of 6-BT have been identified as a significant risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and are causally linked to childhood obesity and unfavorable fat distribution. The compound is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials as a potential treatment for metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, where it is administered orally to improve glucose homeostasis and liver fat content.
