Overview

**6-Methylpurine** is a synthetic purine derivative and a toxic analog of adenine. It acts primarily as a bisubstrate inhibitor of enzymes that bind adenosyl moieties, notably inhibiting purine-nucleoside phosphorylase (EC 2.4.2.1)[2][3][8]. This inhibition can disrupt purine metabolism and may lead to the suppression of RNA and protein synthesis[3][8]. The compound has been widely used in biochemical research for studying nucleic acid function, enzyme assays related to purine metabolism, genetic engineering applications, and plant tissue culture[4]. In pharmaceutical development, it has been explored as an experimental anti-cancer agent due to its ability to interfere with nucleotide synthesis pathways[4]. However, it is not approved for clinical use in any indication.
