Overview

62Cu-ethylglyoxal bis(thiosemicarbazone) (62Cu-ETS) is a lipophilic radiopharmaceutical used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer for the quantification of regional blood flow, particularly in the kidneys. Developed by Jeffrey L. Lacy and colleagues, it utilizes the short-lived positron emitter copper-62 (half-life of 9.74 minutes), which can be produced on-site using a zinc-62/copper-62 generator. The tracer's mechanism involves rapid extraction from the blood and intracellular trapping, making it an effective agent for measuring renal blood flow (RBF) as an alternative to 15O-water. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for assessing renal perfusion in healthy volunteers and patients with renal disease or arterial blockages.
