Overview

64Cu-TATE is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical designed for the detection and staging of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) using positron emission tomography (PET). It consists of the somatostatin analog peptide Tyr3-octreotate (TATE) labeled with the positron-emitting radioisotope copper-64 (64Cu). The agent functions by binding with high affinity to somatostatin receptors (SSTRs), particularly the SSTR2 subtype, which is frequently overexpressed on the surface of neuroendocrine tumor cells. The use of 64Cu offers several clinical advantages over the more common 68Ga-labeled tracers, including a significantly longer half-life (12.7 hours vs. 68 minutes), which allows for delayed imaging to improve tumor-to-background contrast and facilitates centralized production and distribution. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials, including comparative studies against 68Ga-DOTATATE and 18F-TATE, to establish its diagnostic performance and utility in early diagnosis and staging.
